Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset has sold more residential locks in America than any other brand, and Maryland homes from Columbia to Annapolis are full of them. The most common series we rekey are the 660 deadbolt, the 200/300 entry knob lines, the 740/780 lever sets, and anything carrying the SmartKey logo, a small slot beside the keyway that reads “SmartKey.” Older Kwikset Titan series from the 1990s and early 2000s use the same pin diameters but different spring lengths, so a technician who grabs the wrong kit will have a cylinder that binds in humid weather.

We carry OEM Kwikset bottom pins in sizes 1 through 6, plus the longer top pins and wafer springs that SmartKey cylinders need. For standard pin-tumbler Kwikset locks, quality aftermarket pins from LAB or Major work fine and save you a few dollars. SmartKey is different. Those wafers and sidebar springs are proprietary, and aftermarket equivalents we have tested do not hold tolerance through Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycles. We use genuine Kwikset SmartKey components and charge accordingly.

To identify your lock, check the latch face for a stamped model number, or look at the key bow. A Kwikset key has a rounded shoulder with the Kwikset name or the older “KW1” stamping. If your key says “SC1,” you have a Schlage. We stock Medeco and Schlage pin kits too, so one call handles mixed hardware.

Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• The key turns but the bolt does not retract. This usually means the tailpiece has slipped or the cam inside the cylinder has worn flat. Rekeying alone will not fix it, but we can rebuild the cylinder and rekey it in the same visit.
• You need to jiggle the key to find the sweet spot. Worn pins, or pins installed by a previous owner who used the wrong sizes, create false shear lines. The lock opens when you happen to align one of them, not the real one.
• The SmartKey cylinder spins freely with no resistance. The sidebar has dropped out of position, often because someone forced the reset tool or used a non-Kwikset blank. SmartKey failures are not user-serviceable without the cradle tool and a new sidebar assembly.
• The key works in warm weather but sticks in winter. Maryland’s humidity swells wooden doors and shifts strike plates, but if the key itself binds, the pin chambers may have corrosion from road salt tracked in on keys. We clean and rekey with nickel-silver pins that resist it better.
• You have rekeyed before and now the lock accepts the old key too. A previous rekey left original master pins in the stack, or someone stacked two bottom pins in one chamber. Either way, the lock has more combinations than you were told.

SmartKey rekeying starts at $119 because of the specialized cradle and genuine Kwikset wafers we use. If the cylinder needs rebuilding, parts run $15-$35 on top.

Every rekey includes new bottom pins, top pins, springs, and a key code record we keep on file. You get two new keys; additional copies are $5 each cut on-site. DIY or Call Us?

A Kwikset rekey kit from the hardware store costs $12 and works fine in a vise on a workbench. On a door, in February, with a cylinder that has 20 years of grit inside, it is a different story. The plug follower must be pushed straight through the cylinder body without tipping. Tip it, and the top pins and springs launch into the grass or the hallway carpet. We have found more of them in Catonsville basements than you would think.

SmartKey cylinders are not designed for field disassembly at all. The reset cradle, sidebar alignment, and wafer sequencing require factory tooling. If you force the reset slot with a paperclip or the wrong blank, you will convert a rekeyable cylinder into a paperweight.

What you can safely check: whether the key is a genuine Kwikset blank, whether the deadbolt throws smoothly with the thumbturn, and whether the strike plate is aligned. Beyond that, the job goes faster and cleaner with the right bench, the right light, and the right pins already sorted.
