The 4800 series is the residential workhorse you’ll find in Maryland homes built 1985-2010, especially in the split-levels around Columbia and the brick colonials of Pikesville. It uses a 1-inch throw bolt and 2-3/8-inch backset as standard. The 4870 series steps up to a 1-1/8-inch throw with a hardened steel insert, common in commercial-to-residential conversions around Fells Point and the converted mills of Ellicott City. The 4900 series is the current grade 1 residential line, with a solid brass bolt and anti-saw pins.

To identify yours, check the face of the deadbolt for a small stamped series number near the keyway, or measure the backset from the door edge to the center of the cylinder. Signs Your Sargent Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• The key sticks or requires jiggling. The pin chambers in the Sargent cylinder are precision-machined, but Maryland’s airborne salt and humidity corrode the bottom pins over time. The fix is either a cylinder rebuild or full replacement, depending on wear.
• The thumb turn spins without throwing the bolt. The tailpiece connector between the thumb turn and the bolt mechanism has sheared or stripped. On the 4800 series, this is a known weak point after heavy use, and it means the bolt isn’t engaging the strike even though it feels like it is.
• The bolt extends but won’t retract without pulling the door toward you. The strike plate has shifted, or the bolt itself is warping from years of slamming against a misaligned strike. In Maryland’s older homes with settling foundations, especially in Federal Hill and Mount Vernon, this is more common than the lock itself failing.
• The deadbolt works from inside but not with the key outside. The exterior cylinder’s cam has cracked or the tailpiece has separated. This is a security issue, not just a convenience problem, because the lock appears engaged when it isn’t.
• The entire assembly loosens in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the door material, or the cross-bore has enlarged from repeated stress. Solid wood doors from the 1970s hold screws better than the composite cores used in 1990s construction around Glen Burnie and Pasadena.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check the backset measurement yourself with a tape measure, and you can confirm whether the door edge is 2-3/8-inch or the less common 2-3/4-inch. You can also look for the series stamp on the face of the lock. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to rekey or remove a Sargent cylinder without the correct follower tool. The top pins are under spring pressure, and without the housing supported properly, they launch into the door cavity or your eye. We’ve fished enough springs out of Maryland carpets to know.

Beyond that, Sargent’s anti-pick features make cylinder reassembly unforgiving. One pin loaded backward, and the key won’t work at all.
