- The touchscreen is responsive but the deadbolt won’t throw. Usually the gear motor is stripping under load. In Maryland’s humidity-swollen seasonal doors, especially in waterfront communities like Deale or Shady Side, the bolt meets extra friction and the motor burns out trying to overcome it.
- “Offline” in the app despite fresh batteries. The Z-Wave or Bluetooth radio module is failing, or the antenna connection has corroded. We see this most in homes near the Chesapeake where salt air accelerates contact oxidation.
- Intermittent beeping or false low-battery warnings. The voltage regulator on the PCB is drifting. Baldwin’s early Evolved boards had a batch issue with this; if your lock is 2017-2019 vintage, we likely know the serial range.
- The exterior lever spins freely with no resistance. The clutch mechanism has separated from the spindle, often from forced entry attempts or from internal corrosion after years of Maryland freeze-thaw cycling.
- Key override works but electronic functions don’t. This isolates the problem to the smart module, not the mechanical cylinder. Good news: the cylinder and your physical key still work in an emergency. Bad news: the smart half needs professional diagnosis, the PCB is not owner-serviceable.

What we don’t recommend: disassembling the smart module, attempting to solder the PCB, or forcing a stuck deadbolt with tools. The motor and clutch are under spring tension, and the electronic components are not designed for field repair.
